Visitors could mingle among the expo-style booths and talk first-hand with the cr uise line suppliers about ships, itineraries and the hottest destination s. Our R ACT Travelworld and Cr uise Travel Centre staff were on hand to secure the best deals for booking on the day, with the chance to go in the draw to win a Tempur travel set, kindly donated by Har vey Norman Hobart City. Most deals booked on the day were South Pacific and New Zealand cr uising from Australia, with Alaska, Asia and European itineraries also very popular. Visitor numbers were up and bookings on the day increased by over 10% compared to last year's event, proving that cr uising is extremely popular with Tasmanians. This supports the national trend that cr uising is one of the biggest growth sectors of the Australian travel industry. So, why should you choose to cr uise? It is the best value, all inclusive holiday choice for singles, couples and families alike. We look for ward to seeing you in our stores to secure your next cruise holiday. Vietnam with Peregrine Adventures Stacey Lyons, RACT Travelworld Ulverstone I f you're looking for an affordable destination not too far by plane from Australia, with great weather, amazing food and lovely people, Vietnam is the place to go. I flew Vietnam Airlines and was pleasantly surprised at the standard of in-flight entertainment, comfortable seating, cabin service and food in the moder n aircraft on the flight from Melbourne to Ho Chi Minh City. Our Peregrine tour leader met us at the airport and was our guide for the entire journey. It was comforting to know that our guide was taking us everywhere and explaining the history so we didn't miss out on anything. Ho Chi Minh City is a vibrant bustling city -- the first thing you notice is the number of scooters that bu zz around 24/7! The many fascinating sights include the Reunification Palace, ancient pagodas, markets and the Cu Chi Tunnels, about 35 kilometres from the city. The tunnels are a rem nant from the Vietnam War and give an insight into how the Cu Chi people lived underground during the conflict. Next stop was Hoi An, once a major seaport but now a quaint fishing village and tourist attraction with numerous silk tailors, who can create tailor-made clothing in a day or so for a very reasonable price. Visits to China Beach in the ancient Kingdom of Champa (now a UNESCO World Heritage site), the r uins of My Son and Da Nang are all possible day trips from Hoi An. Another short flight took us to Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. This beautiful city has many colonial buildings, tree-lined boulevards and small lakes located around the city. We visited One Pillar Pagoda, Hanoi's oldest str ucture, dating back to 1049; Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum; and Hoa Lo Prison. At night we explored the Old Quarter and the colourful market stalls. The highlight of our short visit to Vietnam was the picturesque Halong Bay, a 3 1/2 hour drive from Hanoi. We boarded our chartered boat and cruised past awe-inspiring limestone islands of all shapes and sizes, some with their ow n beaches and caves. If you have enough time on your trip to Vietnam, make sure you include an overnight or two-night stop onboard a traditional junk in Halong Bay.
