Escape to Craigie Knowe H idden away near the town of Cranbrook on Tasmania’s East Coast is a heritage homestead rich in history and character. Dating back to 1834, the homestead perches on the highest point of the Swan Vale valley floor – the rocky hill or ‘craggy knoll ’, which the Gaelic settlers coined ‘Craigie Knowe’. Built in 1832 and recently renovated, this luxurious private retreat accommodates up to six guests on a whole-of-house basis. Downstairs there’s the master bedroom, main bathroom, modern kitchen, separate dining and comfor table living room with open fire. Upstairs there are two additional bedrooms, both with ensuites. Craigie Knowe is recognised as the source of Tasmania’s first great cabernet sauvignon and is the oldest vineyard on Tasmania’s East Coast. Surrounded by the vines that have made it famous, Craigie Knowe is within easy reach of the Freycinet Peninsula and the historic towns and pristine beaches of the East Coast. The property is a 90-minute drive from both Hobart and Launceston. From Craigie Knowe you can stroll to nearby cellar doors then come back to sip a local vintage by the warmth of a crackling open fire, or enjoy an al fresco barbecue in the courtyard overlooking the vines. w ww.craigieknowe.com.au October / November 2012 45 In Tasmania today In Tasmania today Quick win The prize is two nights’ accommodation for two people.
