R ecently I attended a breakdown on the road under the Tasman Bridge at Montagu Bay. The driver said he had been driving along when the car simply lost power and stopped in the middle of the road. I opened the bonnet to investigate the cause of the problem. While the engine was being cranked, 30,000 volts of electrical current was arcing from the ignition coil to the nearest earth point in a spectacular 50mm flame. I discovered that the primary lead had dislodged from the ignition coil. Upon inspection, the lead seemed to be in good ser viceable condition so I refitted it to the ignition coil and started the engine. Problem solved – our R ACT member drove away. About two hours later on the same day, another job appeared on my screen in the RACT van – Montagu Bay under the Tasman Bridge, engine cut out. As I approached the vehicle I saw that it was the same make and model as the other vehicle, but a different colour! Jules’ Gems Regular motoring tips from RACT patrolman Julian McGarry Truth, stranger than fiction It was about 20 metres from the location of the previous job. On opening the bonnet I saw ... yes, the coil lead had dislodged itself from the distr ibutor cap. Yet again, the coil lead seemed to be in good condition. I refitted it to the distributor and started the engine. Stranger things have no doubt been known to happen, but I can’t think of a single coincidence to compete w ith this!
