Lindy George She says T ake one well-built car, add some stylish design and a pinch of quirkiness and what do you get? A Hyundai Veloster. Then include a splash of extras and you have a Veloster+. Now throw in a turbo and you have a third variant! The Veloster+ is desig ned for those who like to be seen, with a bold range of colour choices that co-ordinate with painted inserts on the 18” alloys. The two-piece panoramic sunroof gives you that open-air feel. The press of a button will close the blind, blocking out the UV rays and reducing cabin temperature – or in our case, blocking out the cold and increasing the cabin temperature. The most unusual feature of the Veloster is that it’s a two-door coupe with a third door on the passenger side. To keep the design flow ing, the rear door handle is cleverly hidden in the window frame. It’s a better option than a rear-seat passenger exiting the vehicle through the front passenger door. Headroom is limited and the best indication of that is the sticker on the tailgate, warning you to be mindful of your rear-seat passengers’ heads as you close the hatch. The design of the rear window also means no rear wiper, so in wet weather, regular stops to clean the window were necessary. And while the boot size is adequate and has 60/40 split folding rear seats, lifting in and out is a bit of a heave-ho. Safety is well and tr uly covered with six airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distr ibution (EBD), Brake Assist System (BAS), Vehicle Stability Management (VSM) with Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Traction Control System (TCS), Daytime Running Lights (DRL), rear park assist and a rear-view camera standard across the range. Veloster+ will also include push button start, heated folding side mirrors, climate control and leather seats with electric driver’s seat including lumbar support. The 1.6 litre 6-speed manual handles like Finance it with us! RACT Car Loans offer competitive rates, low fees, great service and minimum hassle – with discounted interest rates for R ACT members. Call 13 27 22 or apply on line at www.ract.com.au it’s on tracks and is a great drive, although it is lacking slightly in grunt. Our fuel consumption hovered around the mid 7s, low 6s on the open road and low 8s with four occupants and a boot full of gear. Like all Hyundais, the Veloster’s fit and finish rivals the Europeans. And although it’s probably not the car for a growing family, I’m sure Gen Y will love it. ANCAP ★★★★★ Green Rating ★★★★★ October / November 2012 35 Life on the move
