Journeys : Oct Nov 2012
H elp will soon be at hand for Tasmanian motorists in search of a new car, with judging under way for the latest Australia's Best Cars program. Australia's Best Cars is the most tr usted and comprehensive new vehicle testing program and is run each year by the state motoring clubs, who provide experts for the judging panel, which this year includes the R ACT's Lindy George and General Manager Roadside and Technical Ser vices Darren Moody (above, far right). "It differs from other testing programs in that we assess each vehicle again st up to 21 individual criteria including value for money, design and function and on-road perfor mance," Dar ren says. The number-crunching has been completed on the volume-selling model in 15 categories from each manufacturer, ranging from sm all to luxury and 4WDs, with the finalist being assessed this month at a specialist facility at Choosing your next new car is as easy as ABC The AAA's James Goodwin previews Australia's Best Cars 2012 Anglesea in Victoria. "When you spend a week driving a variety of cars, one after the other, it becomes clear which vehicles stand out," Darren says. "The judges conduct these extreme evaluation s so you don't need to." The test facility replicates some of the country's harshest roads and vehicles are measured on a range of criteria, including value for money, depreciation, fuel consumption, performance and safety. "The only thing we don't judge is the way the car looks, because although that's important, we'll leave that decision up to the buyer!" Lindy says. The winners of Australia's Best Cars will be announced on 27 November 2012 with details in the next edition of R ACT Journeys.
