RACT supports Cycling Code of Conduct in Tasmania I n 2011, Cycling Tasmania was successful in its application to the RACT Community Fund for a grant to assist in the publication of a code of conduct for cyclists and motorists, with a view to improving the relationship between var ious road user groups. It is regularly documented that there needs to be a better understanding between motorists and cyclists, and that more can be done to promote safely shar ing the road in Tasmania. In assessing Cycling Tasmania’s application for assistance, the R ACT v iewed support for the Code of Conduct project as a tangible way in which the motoring organisation could advance these aims – taking a practical step, rather than adding to the lip service that is often paid to this very real challenge. Bicycles are classified as vehicles under the Tasmanian Road Rules and cyclists must obey all appropr iate regulations. However there are some specific rules applying to bikes that are not well understood by either bike riders or drivers and these can cause confusion and conf lict. The code focuses on these rules and provides advice on additional things riders can do, as individuals or when riding in groups, to improve relationships with other road users and the w ider community. If you would like a copy of the brochure please contact Donna Sward on 6236 4308 or firstname.lastname@example.org or collect a copy from cycling outlets across Tasmania.
