Our clubs are all closely affiliated through our Canberra-based secretar iat, the Australian Automobile Association (AA A), and the AAA conference in Tasmania will include senior representatives from all our sister organisations from across the countr y. Through clubs such as the RACT, the NRMA and the RACV, the AAA represents the interests of over six million motorists in Australia at the national level. We have a full agenda of matters to discuss that affect motorists all over Australia, as well as some interesting presenters to assist us in our deliberations. The AAA meeting will be followed by a workshop that w ill include senior managers from clubs around the countr y who are involved in all elements of the business, including areas such as technical services, product development and road safety. The workshop theme is Collaborate and innovate now to build capacity for the future. They will share experiences, ideas and initiatives to support their members in each state and examine potential national projects. It is great that these national meetings are being held in Tasmania, especially in the w inter period when visitor numbers are always subdued. ————— I was recently honoured to present plaques to some 29 North West Coasters who have achieved the milestone of 50 years or more of R ACT membership. To put it into context, in those fifty years we have seen twelve Prime Ministers and 14 Tasmanian Premiers. Fifty years ago the British Empire and Commonwealth Games were held in Perth, Margaret Court and Rod Laver were competing in the Australian Open, and President John F Kennedy was grappling with the Cuban Missile Cr isis. So our plaque presentation was a great time for reminiscing. It was a very happy occasion, and we held a special lunch at the Bur nie Club to thank our 50 year members for their loyalty over five decades. I was also delighted to be able to announce that the RACT is now investing significantly in a remodelling of our Bur nie branch. Work commenced w ith a new roof and upgrades to the exterior of the building. The final result will be a completely renovated interior to provide a high-standard office environment for members and staff for many years to come Stuart Slade President & Chairman of the Board If you use a car in Tasmania, get ready to be slugged by increased charges on your registration from October this year. Motorists have been targeted in the recent State Budget with increases in the Motor Tax component of registration fees and in the duty payable on M AIB premiums. In its May Budget, the Tasmanian Government raised the duty on MAIB premiums from $6 per registration to $20 per registration. At the same time, the Motor Tax was also increased by 20% for light vehicles, campervans and commercial vehicles of less than three tonnes. These are substantial increases that will have an impact on just about every Tasmanian household budget when they come into effect in October. According to the Budget papers, the two increases w ill generate an additional $16 million of new tax revenue for the Gover nment’s coffers in the first full year of operation. The tax hikes were not matched by a commitment to inject much-needed funding into road maintenance – to resurface cracked or worn-out pavements, renew faded or non-existent line markings, strengthen or widen existing narrow roads, or seal dangerous gravel shoulders on many rural roads. Calls from the many Tasmanians who expressed concern about the state of our roads through the RACT’s website Dob in a Road campaign went unheeded in the Budget. The Budget papers also showed that only four of the sixteen $90 million Community Roads Prog ram projects have been completed. No extra initiatives were funded in road safety, and while Tasmania Police was spared another cut following last year’s $8 million cut to its operations, this year’s Budget papers acknowledged a reduction in police operational numbers available to conduct traffic policing activities. RACT had advocated strongly that any further cuts to Tasmania Police would affect road safety and we remain concerned that any gains in crash reductions achieved through consistently high-visibility policing operations over recent years could be reduced.
