He says Darren Moody Hyundai i40 Tourer – Elite Now it’s official – in 2011 Hyundai/ Kia was the fastest growing vehicle manufacturer in the world. With the release of the i40 tourer to Australia ahead of a couple of other new models later in the year, it is onward and upward for the Korean manufacturer. The mid-spec i40 Tourer Elite arr ived just before the school holidays, so we packed up for a short getaway. The wagon space swallowed the bags without an issue. A floor-mounted luggage rail allowed the bags to be secured safely – they’re also handy to stop the grocery bags from sliding about. The seats offer good shape and support and rear-seat legroom will accommodate adults easily. Interior materials and switchgear are all top-rate, something you might expect to see in more expensive Euro makes. Occupant connectivity is as expected with standard Bluetooth (phone and audio streaming), USB and auxiliary connections. There are multiple steering wheel buttons for audio, multi-function display and cruise control, which also has a speed-limiting function. The weak link in the i40 is the 2.0L 130kW, 213Nm petrol engine. The main issue is how hard you have to rev the engine to make it perform. It’s happy enough cruising along the flat at highway speeds, but when the hills beckon the six-speed auto hangs onto gears too long, dropping the engine out of its torque band and then jumping back a couple of gears, although using the paddle shifters to override the auto will improve driveability. The downside to higher engine speeds is higher fuel consumption. The best I saw was 7.8L/100km, which was predominantly highway r unning. A mixture of urban and city saw 9.9L/100km. The official combined figure is 7.7L/100km. A 1.7L turbo diesel is also available. Coupled with a six-speed manual in the base spec Active, it returns a remarkable 4.7L/100km. Hyundai has been a bit hit and miss in the ride and handling department, but I’m pleased to say the i40 is a hit. It clearly has a Euro influence in the handling department and has had local refinement to produce a compliant ride, flat cornering and good turn-in response from the electric-assisted power steering. At just under $40,000 dr iveway, Hyundai has clearly moved away from the cheap and cheerful image, but the i40 certainly ranks with Euro offerings for styling, value and build quality in this price range.
