Wrest Point State League The Wrest Point State League 2012 season kicks off on Saturday 31 March with regional season openers at West Park, Aurora Stadium and Lauderdale Recreation Ground. RACT Insurance is delighted to once again support this great community-based competition. Over the past four years the RACT Insurance Tasmanian Portraiture Prize has grown into Tasmania’s premier portraiture award and is the result of a highly successful partnership between RACT Insurance, Clemenger Tasmania, GEON and Tasmanian Regional Arts. The objective of the award is to foster the development of emerging Tasmanian artists and provide an opportunity for the public to appreciate the talents of these artists. RACT Insurance, in conjunction with its partners, continues to refine and develop the competition. This has seen a refocusing of the competition on emerging artisits who are endeavouring to develop their career in the arts. Support for this category of artists is important and provides emerging artists with a platform to exhibit their works and benchmark their abilty as they develop their artistic aspirations. Tasmanian artists aged 30 years and under are invited to paint a portrait of a living Tasmanian who is important to them. An artist statement describing the inspiration and meaning behind the artwork is also submitted. Trent Sayers, CEO of RACT Insurance, believes the success of the competition, now in its fourth year, is partly due to its unique nature. “The RACT Insurance Tasmanian Portraiture Prize is unique,” said Sayers. “We believe it is the only such competition in Australia. The prize achieves a number of objectives, providing a lasting legacy for Tasmanians. It also builds a body of portraiture art for generations to come, reflecting Tasmanian society in the early 21st century. Importantly, it gives Tasmanians the chance to recognise the many heroes that live among us – whether they are a well-known Tasmanian or simply a Tasmanian who has inspired an artist.” The 2012 RACT Insurance Tasmanian Portraiture Prize will be announced on 7 September 2012 at the Long Gallery, Hobart. First prize is $5000 and a trip for two to the Archibald Prize exhibition in Sydney. Conditions of entry and registration forms are available at www.taspp.com.au Entries close at 5pm, 30 June 2012. The Wrest Point State League will break new ground in 2012 with many matches scheduled outside the traditional weekend time slots and at night to give the community greater access to the competition. The 2012 fixture will see Wrest Point State League football played at night on Wednesdays, Fridays and Mondays, as well as the traditional Saturdays, Sundays and Saturday nights. Round 1 will commence with a marquee match when traditional rivals Clarence and Glenorchy go head to head on Wednesday night, April 4, at KGV oval. And not to be missed is the 2011 Grand Final rematch in round 4 at West Park, on Saturday April 28 between the 2011 premiers, Launceston, and runners-up, Burnie. The Wrest Point State League with its diverse fixture and statewide nature showcases the best footballers in the state. RACT Insurance has been a proud supporter of the Wrest Point State League since its inception in 2009 with the creation of the RACTI Player of the Year Award. The 2011 winner was Clarence star Cameron Thurley, a 59-game veteran of the club, with 138 goals scored in the new Tasmanian State League, arguably a very worthy recipient. But RACT Insurance’s involvement doesn’t stop there. RACT Footy Tipping is recognised by AFL Tasmania as the official footy tipping competition for Tasmania’s premier football contest. Not only does RACT Insurance offer fantastic prizes each week for the official tipping contest, but it also supplies the runners’ uniforms for all Wrest Point State League clubs.
