6446 VW Scirocco R D espite being available to var ious global markets for more than 35 years, Scirocco R has only just made it to our shores. Was it worth the wait? You bet. Scirocco shares the Golf R’s 188Kw 2.0L direct injection turbo engine with either a six-speed manual or DSG gearbox. In either form it’s a cracking combination, with almost no turbo lag and a fat torque cur ve providing great driving flexibility. Scirocco doesn’t get Golf ’s AW D system – the bonus is a weight reduction of 125kg, making it extra lively off the mark. Dynamics benefit from a lower ride height, w ider track, well weighted electro-mechanical steering and VW’s XDL (extended electronic differential lock), meaning there is very little difference between the front-end grip of Scirocco and Golf R, with the lighter Scirocco having better feel on tur n-in. I usually complain about the long (and expensive) list of options for V W, but in this instance I’m pleased to say the options list is confined to a high-end audio and sunroof. That means adaptive suspension, 19” alloys, dual-z one climate, cr uise control, Bluetooth connectivity and metallic paint (to mention a few) are all standard fare. There are a few compromises. Front v isibility was my biggest beef – a combination of some of the heaviest rain I have driven in and twisting roads meant I was constantly leaning for ward to see around the A-pillar. Rear v isibility also wasn’t great, due to the low roofline. Rear-seat space and the requirement to use 98ron fuel were other negatives, but all are a small price to pay for what is a great-looking, dynamic fun machine. With a driveway price of just over $53,000 for the manual and an extra $2600 for a DSG it sits just below the Golf R but is a $10,000 stretch over the fantastic GTI - but then you don’t get the special looks the Scirocco commands!
