Gay McKinnon drives the San Juan Skyway Rocky Mountain high “ The guards will hand out free safety glasses – for the cinders,” the driver announces. The train rattles round a sheer cliff, draped in a long black veil of coal smoke. The San Juan Mountains, rich with volcanic deposits of gold and silver, tower above us, streaked with ice. Their foothills are forested with a dense patchwork of dark pine and sunlit aspen. Below, the Animas River is a swollen torrent, fed by cascades that tumble from the thawing snow.
