First drives Darren Moody gets behind the wheel of some new offerings Jaguar XF 2.2D Ever thought there was an air of exclusivity in owning a Jaguar? Well, gaining membership to this exclusive club has just become more affordable with the release of the MY12 Jaguar XF in the form of a 2.2L diesel. Recent global growth has seen a 14% increase in Jaguar ownership, related in no small way to this vehicle which accounts for more than 46% of Jaguar sales, so it’s not surprising that Jag uar Australia officials are getting excited by this model. The 2.2L 140kW 450Nm oil bur ner is more than capable of shifting the big cat from rest at a decent pace. The eight speed auto gets the best out of the engine with seamless shifts. Noise from the diesel engine is absolutely minimal under acceleration and almost non-existent at cr uising speeds. Want to ramp it up a little? Turn the rotary dial gear shift to Sport and completely different shift mapping appears, or if that isn’t enough, steering wheel located paddle shifters will put you in control. While it doesn’t punch as hard as either of the V6 diesel engines, it isn’t slow by any means. Economy is Jaguar’s best effort ever at a frugal 5.4L/100km, which gives it luxury car sales tax advantages. Assisting this is a standard auto stop-start system. The only real letdown for me were the front seats. I thought they were a bit f lat and lacked decent support on the squab. Rear passenger legroom was restr icted with the front seats all the way back, but the driver would need to be well beyond six feet tall to need the seat that far rearward. Passenger headroom in the rear is also a little tight for those a bit taller than the average. Aside from that, luxury and tranquillity awaits all occupants. Steering is direct and well weighted, ride is as you might expect a little on the firm side, which of course helps ride control. After a decent drive over many and varied road surfaces the Jaguar was never unsettled despite my co-pilot hitting some of the biggest potholes I have seen in recent times. Not withstanding the size of the XF it didn’t feel overly big or heav y to manoeuvre on the tight twisty bits. With cruise control set on the highway and the standard 8-speaker 400 watt audio cranked up, this big cat would eat up the kilometres w ith ease. Standard touch screen Sat-Nav system with 30GB hard drive for your CDs, Bluetooth, iPod and USB connectiv ity will ensure you’re well and tr uly connected and don’t get lost. So what are the membership fees to join this exclusive club? Just under $85,000 drive away will get you in a white or black one, premium paint will add another $2650. Compare that to the German brands and the value for money proposition looks pretty good.
