Lifeline Chats embracing life! L ifeline Chats is about connecting older people w ith their community. A monthly newsletter links participants to a range of social activities to help them build friendships. Activ ities range from tours, lunches, quizzes, museum visits, concerts and an art group. Recently one participant said “I ’m living life now, not just watching from the outside.” As well as social outings, Chats participants can also receive a weekly friendly call from a volunteer. Transport can be a major barrier to social inclusion for older people. Chats provides transpor t through ta xis and also volunteer drivers who drive Chats vehicles and buses kindly donated by Budget. Chats p articipants sharing a laugh at the J am Packed cafe Jennifer Skabo C arers are people who provide unpaid care and support to family members and friends who have a disability, mental illness, chronic condition, terminal illness or frailty. You might be surprised to know that more than one in eight Australians give this kind of care. But the carers in our community also need care and support – that’s the role of Carers Tasmania, which provides impor tant services like counselling, advice, advocacy, education and training. One Tasmanian with a story to tell is Carolyn Stubbs, who lives in Queenstow n and is the primar y carer for her seven-year-old son Ryan. He has severe autism and although he attends school w ith a full-time aide, he needs constant care from Carolyn – dressing, toileting, feeding, behaviour management – it’s a 24 hour, 7 day task. Somehow she also finds time to coordinate the Coffee Club, which gives the dozen or so other carers in Queenstown the chance to get together each month with a representative of Carers Tasmania, share their thoughts, solve some problems and give each other the mutual support they need. We acknowledge with admiration and respect the achievements, hard work and dedication of people like Carolyn and other carers across Tasmania.
