The new-look Taste Festival RACT Insurance is proud to continue its long association with the Taste Festival, again sponsoring the RACT Insurance Buskers Festival. RACT Insurance has a long history of being active in supporting significant community events across Tasmania and the Taste Festival continues to position itself as a well-supported and regarded event on the community calendar. As Tasmania’s only wholly locally operated insurance company, RACT Insurance takes seriously its obligation to support the community within which we live and work, and we are pleased with our role in making the Taste Festival experience accessible to Tasmanians. The Taste Festival, Tasmania’s largest annual event, returns to Hobart’s waterfront for its 23rd year with a refined new look and additional space, taking in the iconic Salamanca Lawns for the first time. The long-time Taste Festival venue has undergone a substantial facelift in the past two years, with new food and beverage areas, new flooring and glass doors leading out onto the waterfront and Salamanca Place sides, all adding to the summer celebration that attracts more than 250,000 people over seven days. In 2011/12 there will be an additional 500 seats, incorporating a new decked area on the Salamanca side of the venue, as well as access to Salamanca Lawns for families to spread a picnic blanket in the sunshine. This year’s event will also feature a new area, the Winery, dedicated to the pleasures of fine Tasmanian wines and the delicacies that best go with them. Situated in the event’s forecourt, the State’s best boutique wineries will offer a broad tasting range including limited releases, and visiting and local experts will give talks and guided tastings. With a new shaded seating area, a dedicated ‘tasting arena’, and a seven-day program of wine events, this will be a popular new addition to the Festival. The popular Red Hat Tours, introduced last year, will return, offering small group, specialised themed tours of the Taste Festival. ‘In-the-know’ locals will lead visitors on carefully planned safaris to taste artisan soft cheeses, smoked and cured smallgoods, superb Tasmanian seafood and cool-climate wines. There are also tours specialising in craft brewing, confectionary and more. Visiting specific stalls to meet the producers and sample their products, Red Hat Tours offer a bespoke Taste Festival experience, perfect for wine and food lovers. An expanded and refined Brasserie will also return this year, featuring Tasmania’s burgeoning craft brewing and cider making industry along with matched foods. Families and children will be well-catered for this year at Coles Kids in the Park on Parliament House Lawns, offering plenty of activities. Daily programming includes a dedicated area for sporting activities and games, family outdoor board games, cooking classes for children, jumping castles and children’s rides, various workshops, face painting, buskers, performers and other family entertainment. The Forecourt Stage will become the Festival focal point for stage-based acts and busker performances throughout the day. Each evening, the forecourt will transform into a popular area to dance the night away with friends. An exciting line-up of entertainment will again be a Festival highlight, with a focus on showcasing Tasmanian talent. Roving performers will also entertain the crowds around the venue. And, of course, the traditional waterfront New Year’s Eve party will return, with a host of live entertainment throughout the venue. Entertainment will include the bright melodic sounds of the Adam Cousens Band on the main stage, followed by the funkalistic ‘Motown Show’ by Hobart’s hottest groove band, Sugartrain. The Waterfront stage opens with the Wolfe Brothers’ acoustic music, followed by a sensational performance by the whole Wolfe Brothers band (recently named Tasmanian band of the year) bringing in the New Year with the best in covers and country electric music. For ticketing information, visit the Taste Festival website. This year, the Taste Festival website (www.tastefestival.com.au) is accessible via smart phones, allowing patrons to see what’s on throughout the venue each day. You can also subscribe to the event’s eNewsletter via the website, which will keep you up-to-date with new information in the lead-up to the event. The Taste Festival is an initiative of the Hobart City Council, whose aim is to present a unique and memorable festival that showcases some of the best food and beverage Tasmania has to offer, while providing opportunities for the whole community to meet with friends and family and celebrate the essence of summer in Hobart in a fun and safe environment.
