Exhibition Dates Academy Gallery – Launceston Academy of the Arts School of Visual and Performing Arts University of Tasmania 2 Invermay Road, Inveresk 9 – 30 September Devonport Regional Gallery 45 Stewart Street, Devonport 8 – 23 October Long Gallery – Hobart Salamanca Arts Centre, 77 Salamanca Place, Hobart 16 – 30 November Robert O’Connor’s Brand X has won this year’s RACT Insurance Tasmanian Youth Portraiture Prize. Robert’s complex portrait was chosen as the best of 70 entries from around the state, and was announced as the winner at a cocktail function on Friday 9th September. The runner up was Spitfire by Eva Shultz. Artists entering the Prize are all Tasmanian and aged under 30. They were required to portray a living Tasmanian who has inspired them. Now in its fourth year, the Prize is a creation of RACT Insurance and is conducted in close collaboration with Tasmanian Regional Arts and major sponsors, Clemenger Tasmania and GEON. “The Prize is aimed at a number of outcomes,” said Trent Sayers, Chief Executive of RACT Insurance, “We want to provide a platform for aspiring young Tasmanian artists, and to help build a body of uniquely Tasmanian portraiture works reflecting our society in the early 21st Century. The Prize also aims to identify and acknowledge members of the Tasmanian community who provide inspiration to young artists.” Young talent highlights X-factor Brand X, by Robert O’Connor, winner of the 2011 RACT Insurance Tasmanian Youth Portraiture Prize. This years runner up and sponsors’ choice – Eva Shultz and her son Julian. Judges – Troy Ruffles, Jane Haley and Wayne Brookes. Brian and Katie Wightman with Lee and Harvey Lennon.
