ROOM SF ROM $155* PER N I GHT! Life on the move October / November 2011 33 Tasmania has more of a connection with the new Ford Focus than you might think. Current Ford Australia Chief Designer Todd Willing is the son of retired R ACT Approved Repairer Brent Willing. Todd grew up in Tasmania – around cars, of course. Towards the end of high school he found himself drawing pictures of cars when he should have been doing his homework. Work experience came around and as a 15 year-old he thought designing cars might be something he would like to do. A chance connection to Ford through his father gave him a toe in the door. After sending Ford a few drawings, he was invited to their Melbourne design studio for his work experience. That short stint put him on the track to the correct education path to achieve his passion. Ford’s Tasmanian Focus Todd graduated from Monash University in Melbourne and moved to a design company that was contracted from time to time by vehicle manufacturers for overf low work. Gaining experience there and from freelance work over a number years, he was asked to join Ford. During his eight years with the blue oval, Todd has worked around the world with extended stays in Ford ’s Cologne and UK design studios. It was here that he penned the new Focus, and in particular claims the design of the sedan version as his own. (Compare the concept version above left with the real thing). Not bad for a kid who grew up handing spanners to his dad in Tasmania! Darren Moody
