Copyright 2011 RACT Design & production: Digital Ink Printing: Hannanprint Victoria Mailhouse: DMM Distribution: Australia Post ISSN 0818-5549 About your club that older people who are not mobile are at risk of becoming isolated in their communities. It is an issue that is not high enough on the Australian Government’s agenda and the R ACT and its sister organisations interstate believe that in a countr y with an ageing population, it needs to be addressed through a national agenda. The RACT believes that the Tasmanian Gover nment could play an important role by using forums such as COAG and the Australian Transport Ministers’ Council to persuade Canberra to develop strategies that encompass the mobility needs of all older Australians, ranging from safer vehicle design through to local roads and traffic planning and issues around public transport access. Between 2005 and 2009 drivers aged between 75 and 84 were involved in 4.1% of serious casualty crashes; and drivers 85 and over, in just 1.3% of serious casualty crashes. When announcing that the annual on-road assessment for drivers aged 85 and over would be abolished, Infrastr ucture Minister David O’Byrne said that nor mal ageing doesn’t mean a driver is more likely to be involved in a crash and compulsory testing is therefore not improving road safety. “It is important that older drivers are treated the same as all other drivers, and undertake assessments for the same reasons as other drivers,” Mr O’Byr ne said. Make your vote count This edition of Journeys contains information on the candidates standing for election to the Board, and a ballot paper. Members eligible to vote will also find a ballot envelope inserted within the plastic wrap of the magazine. Please note that if you are an Access member, you do not have voting rights and your mail pack will not include the ballot envelope. Walking to Romania for a song With the support of RACT, the City of Launceston’s Inter national Choir Sing Elon is walking to Europe – or at least, the distance from Launceston to Romania, which is 15,378 kilometres! The choir has been walking throughout Tasmania since May and should reach the target in November, to raise money for its upcoming tour to Romania in December and January. With the help of high visibility Walking Bus safety vests from RACT, the choir is taking to the footpaths to raise awareness of its campaign and to encourage fellow young Tasmanians to be active and healthy. Choristers also wear pedometers to record their daily walking. Sing Elon is a 20-voice children’s choir for 10 to 16 year olds. They tour nationally or internationally ever y year, with past destinations including Hong Kong, New Zealand, Samoa, Japan and almost ever y state of Australia. Tour costs are raised by the choir through fund- raising and business support. The choir is made up of children from many different socio- economic backgrounds from across greater Launceston. The common bond of a love of singing creates a very close family atmosphere within the group. They’re a busy bunch – as well as their Walk to Europe project, choir members and their supporters hold regular barbecues, sell chocolates, host movie and trivia nights, run raffles, bag sheep manure, offer babysitting and many more serv ices. The performance tour to Romania and Europe will be Sing Elon’s biggest venture yet. The choir will be based in Romania for almost three weeks in the middle of the European winter. They will perform for school children, Roma villages, charity events, politicians, dignitaries and the public. The choir will also have the chance to work with Romanian children’s choirs to prepare joint concerts. As well as concert perfor mances, Sing Elon will also visit Bran Castle, inspiration for the Dracula legend, have tobogganing lessons in the snow and perhaps tr y some of the local cuisine, including tripe soup! Sing Elon’s European Tour will cost a total of $130,000 for the 20 singers and three adults in the touring party.
