David Johnstone, SJW Senior Judge of Wine From little acorns grow... Just 40 kilometres north of Launceston at Rowella in the picturesque Tamar Valley is the 11 hectare vineyard and winery Holm Oak. First planted to some five hectares of mostly red grape varieties in the eighties by Edward Butler and later owned and run by his son Nick, the vineyard was eventually sold to the Wilson family in 2004. In the intervening years Rebecca Wilson has doubled the size of plantings, expanding Pinot Noir and adding the white varieties Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and interestingly a small planting of the Italian white grape variety Arneis. A new winery was erected to complete the expansion of the vineyard and upgrading of the facilities. Born and reared on King Island Rebecca had an early introduction to vines. It is said, tongue in cheek, that when the wind stops blowing on King Island the people fall over so one wonders what inspired her father to plant vines in such a notoriously windy region. Thankfully her father did as it inspired Rebecca to follow oenology as a career. Seeded with the desire to become a winemaker she finished her schooling in Launceston to enter The University of Adelaide where she completed her degree in winemaking. Stints making wine in the Napa Valley, Riverland, McLaren Vale, and Coonawarra regions followed culminating with five years at Capel Vale in Western Australia, the last two years as senior wi nemaker. The Holm Oak wines show the skill and experience of the winemaker. The Pinot Noir is a complex, savoury wine that has great appeal with foods ranging from Atlantic salmon to richly sourced game food. The Sauvignon Blanc is a tightly made wine with intense flavours and crisp acidity. Rebecca now makes four Riesling styles. The dry style is a Riesling lovers wine with citrus August / September 2011 45
