Journeys : MNJ Aug Sep 2011
Life on the move would be involved, than much later this century when traffic problems will be acute and the cost or an entirely urban motor way proh ibitive. “An added reason for the wester n expressway is that it could link up with a ring road round the wester n margin of the city centres. Such a ring road was originally proposed as long ago as 1945 in the Cook Plan, but despite all the planning that has taken place since then no such road is embodied in the master plan.” Prof. Scott went on to say he regarded the provision of a ring road “as essential as any plan purporting to meet the requirements of a city of 300,000 people.” Over the decades many plans for meeting the future needs of our cities have come and gone. Irrespective of the mer its (from our 21st centur y point of view) of Professor Scott’s idea for a western expressway that would link to a Hobart ring road, he was certainly accurate in his observation that planning such a motor way in 1961 would have been easier than now. Hobart’s current traffic issues are the product of lack of action 50 years and more ago. How will readers of Journeys in 2061 look back upon our own generation’s success or otherwise in planning for future mobility needs? *Conditions apply Keeping you in the home you love Stannah Stairlift free home assessment Inside for straight or turning stairways... .. .or outside for straight stairways www.prking.com.au BLD LIC No 22942 Call Michael on 9748 3488 for your free brochure 19205_PR King Journey Mag Ad_2.indd 1 16/02/11 10:26 AM August / September 2011 43
