She says Lindy George Ilove my Fiesta, but driving the latest editions of SUVs has got me thinking – maybe I bought the wrong car! Yeah, it’s great having the Fiesta’s sports suspension and low-profile tyres for handling and grip, but it does mean crawling over speed humps at a snail’s pace, watching out for ever y pothole and driving into the garage of our new abode with a mere centimetre of clearance. And observ ing that the front grill of large 4WDs is at my head height can be a little concer ning, given the number of vehicles that run red lights. So, it’s a pleasant change to have the clearance, height and r ubber that an SUV offers, especially given the state of our roads – potholes are unlikely to reduce in number any time soon! So I’ve had a very cruisy week in the br ight blue Suby. The Forester S-Edition has a 5-speed auto transmission with manual mode. Its 2.5 litre 4-cylinder petrol turbocharged boxer engine w ill give you a combined fuel consumption of 10.5L/100km – I managed 11.2L/100km on a strictly urban r un. And Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive gives you maximum grip in all conditions. In case you needed a few more acronyms, you’ ll be safe in your S-Edition with Vehicle Dynamic Control (VDC), Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Electronic Brakeforce Distr ibution (EBD) and Brake Assist (BA). Surrounding you are dual front, dual front side and cur tain airbags. Heaps of room, loads of storage and comfy leather-trim seats with blue inserts have the family well catered for. And the comfort and convenience continues w ith dual-zone climate control, anti dust filters, rear heater ducts, tilt/ telescopic leather steering wheel with audio and cruise controls and one-touch electronic folding rear seats (best warn the kids before you hit the button though.) Now for all the extras that set your S-Edition apart from the rest – you get STI sports suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels (even your spare is a full size alloy – I’d buy it just for that), sunroof, sports pedals, sat-nav, Bluetooth, a brilliant reversing camera and bonnet scoop (love it!) It wasn’t until I started driving the Suby that I realised how many other motorists out there like them – they’re everywhere! And so, reluctantly, I’ve handed it back ...
