Yes, there is not a lot of traffic yet, but even so, a large number of people have been killed due to cross-over accidents on this road – preventable of course, by having a barr ier in the centre, which is the case with four lanes. In Queensland, the Bruce Highway, a major interconnecting road from Brisbane to the Sunshine Coast, claimed many lives where there were only two lanes. Nothing was done about it in the past because it would cost too much and was not busy enough but in the last ten years, there has been a f lur ry of activity on the highway, bringing this very busy road into the 21st century. Things do not stay as they are – as population increases, so does traffic, so does the cost of moder nising the roads, so do accidents. Why wait until we have enough statistics to war rant the updating of any dangerous road, which would then cost much more than original estimates? As to the point of putting in more passing lanes, this is only a band-aid solution. What’s the point? There will still be sections of road that will still claim lives, as they have done in the last few years.
