However, in this time we have been able to not only win significant awards for our products but also make strong inroads into major domestic and overseas markets”. Pass me a wee dram and I’ll drink to that! David Johnstone, SJW Senior Judge of Wine Tasmanian malt whisky – the road to success Aquick glance through James Halliday’s 2011 Australian Wine Companion will show that many Tasmanian wineries rate 4 stars and above, which is just one of many examples of how the Tasmanian wine industry is received in the wider world of wine. Our wines are accepted as excellent quality and challenge the best in the world. While not wine, we are well down the path of producing excellent malt whiskies. Time will tell us whether we can challenge the great whisky producers of Scotland, as the whiskies we are making in Tasmania are certainly creating interest at national and international levels. Hellyer’s Road Distiller y is based in Bur nie and is Australia’s largest boutique distillery, producing a range of single malt whiskies, vodka and whisky cream liqueurs. In August 2010 Hellyer’s Road’s peated malt whisky was recognised as the nation’s best malt whisky at the Malt Whisky Society of Australia’s Awards for Excellence. The Hellyer’s Road slightly peated whisky won a silver medal and the Hellyer’s Road Original won a bronze medal, signifying the depth that this north-western distiller y has in its range and the quality of its distillation, maturation and production techniques. Hellyer’s Road Distiller y is a fully ow ned subsidiary of the Betta Milk Co-operative Society Ltd and after an investment of 14 years and $11 million, these national awards are due reward for those that had the foresight to invest in the malt whisky industry. “The significance of these awards will not be lost on whisky drinkers around the globe. It will provide an excellent platform for us to capitalise growth in national and international market places and adds further credence to Tasmania’s burgeoning brand”, said Head Distiller and General Manager of Hellyer’s Road, Mark Littler.
