12 February / March 2011 In our community Your views Spot the speedo Ihad a Citroen Pluriel for four years and I was delighted with its digital speedometer – the figures were large and I never had the need for a conventional speedo. I’m disappointed that my new Peugeot 308 does not have the same speedo – it is too easy to guess whether or not you are speeding with a ‘normal’ speedo but there is no doubt when the digital speedometer says 110 km. Having had the digital speedo, don’t know why they are not compulsor y. The 308 also has a speed limiter – it doesn’t sound a war ning, it just doesn’t let you drive faster than the set speed. Again, why aren’t these standard? Barbara R Benson Myalla Cheap and easy? There is a cheap and easy way to reduce traffic congestion in Hobart’s CBD, and that is to reduce the number of kerbside parking spaces along the main roads. Parking spaces take up valuable space that could be used for through traffic. When people are reverse parking they hold up a whole lane of traffic. People quite often drive around the block several times looking for a parking spot, which adds to the volume of traffic. Parking spots could be replaced with bus lanes, bicycle lanes or extra traffic lanes. The Hobar t City Council might lose a bit of revenue from parking meters, but most people would benefit from a better f low of traffic. However I’ve often felt that all drivers need a refresher course every few years – rules do change and we’d like to do the right thing! Betty Jones North Hobart The matter has continued since Febr uar y and I send the bills back with supporting documentation and the reference number. Queensland Motorways and the hire car company have never replied to any communication. My advice to Queensland travellers intending to use any toll roads would be to keep the reference number for any phone accounts set up, tr iple-check card numbers and vehicle registrations and keep records of any payments for a long time. Accounts could arr ive out of the blue months after your tr ip is over. Peter d’Plesse Rosny Make it a Breeze We read with interest the costly travels of an RACT member on toll roads in Queensland. To avoid any problems on our travel with car and caravan, we have a Breeze account, which covers Victoria, NSW and Queensland. There is no set-up fee – the account is opened with a $40 opening payment that converts to credit. Unused credit does not expire. Accounts can be set up at www.breeze.com.au or 13 54 65. The account can be paid and topped-up by phone, online or at Australia Post. Multiple vehicles can be attached to the account. Breeze tags are posted within seven days. We recommend the Breeze tag for ease of travel and economy. Les and Penny Arnold East Devonport Queensland Motorway blues Graham Cooper is not alone in his experience with Queensland Motor ways. In two trips to Brisbane this year I set up phone accounts to cover motor way tolls. Unfor tunately tolls were not allocated to these accounts as it would appear an incorrect card number was attached by the operator. The bills ar rived first at the hire car company, who deducted $55 each time they advised Queensland Motor ways of the driver’s name. As soon as I was aware of this, all accounts were paid and a reference number obtained. More bills arrived and the hire car company deducted further amounts of $55. Both the hire car company and Queensland Motor ways were written to but no replies were received. Further bills arrived and more letters and emails were sent. Queensland Motor ways could always confirm that accounts had been paid, except the last operator, who claimed she could find no record at all, even when supplied with the reference number. At least the hire car company finally stopped deducting $55 ever y time it happened. The pink elephant question In the last issue of Journeys, Rod Scoles raised the issue of visual distractions on our roadsides. Living down here in Margate we pass Mr Meredith ’s offending elephants, foxes, boat and panda ever y day and have grown used to them. What I find far more offensive and distracting is the proliferation
