February / March 2011 7 In our community Zip merge rule Road safety is ever yone’s responsibility and part of that is knowing the road rules. One rule that is well known but not well practised is the zip merge that applies to merging traffic when there are no lane lines. If you are driving in a line of traffic that is merging with one or more other lines of traffic travelling in the same direction, you must give way to any vehicle ahead of your vehicle (whether it’s on your left or right). In the illustration of a typical zip merge situation, Car B must give way to Car A. The world-first Green Zone Drive, held in Melbourne in late 2010, has been hailed as a success by organisers. The unique public awareness event prov ided the general public with an opportunity to view – and drive! – a wide range of low emission vehicles (LEVs), all of which were existing, ready-to-purchase, low-emission solutions to their mobility needs. The full range of showroom-ready technologies was on offer, from high- efficiency petrol and high torque diesel, through to petrol hybrids and fully-electr ic vehicles. The most popular vehicles drivers sought to tr y out were the unique Mitsubishi i-MiEV, the first commercially-available zero-emission car offered by a mainstream manufacturer in Australia; and the Toyota Hybr ids, including the made-in-Melbour ne Hybrid Camry. Some testers said they had not realised that such a w ide range of low-emission vehicles were already on sale in Australia. R ACT’s Public Policy Manager Vince Taskunas attended Green Zone Drive, along with delegates from other motoring organisations across Australia. He said it was interesting to see that the age-split of testers was fairly even, w ith younger and older drivers taking part. “L EVs make a substantial contribution to lowering our overall emissions. RACT would like to see a similarly innovative event held here in Tasmania, so more people are aware of the real-world possibilities that these vehicles provide,” Mr Taskunas says. “ Since the Melbour ne event, R ACT has had discussions w ith some of the organisers who have show n interest in looking at a potential event for Tasmania. We have also made a submission to the Tasmanian Gover nment to consider supporting such an event, and we’re keen to talk to Sustainable Transport Minister Nick McK im about br inging Green Zone Drive here,” he says. The R ACT believes that an event like Green Zone Drive would prompt more Tasmanian car buyers to seriously consider specifying a low-emission vehicle for their next new car, as a way of making a meaningful contribution to the reduction in CO2 emissions.
