Journeys : Oct Nov 2010
40 October / November 2010 My slice of the island John X "Yes, it's beautiful, isn't it?" I agree, and before I can change the subject, they go on a bit more about how they would all love to live there one day, and how lucky I am. To which I reply, "Yeah, I guess, but when you've grown up there you tend to take it a bit for granted." What I don't tell them is that, as a born and raised Tasmanian, I don't realise how am a zing my home state is until I am away from it for a period of time. That's when you start to understand the fascination that mainlanders have with our beloved island. Of course I still get the old two-headed jokes and I laugh along with them, even though I have heard the same routine a thousand times. I do however find myself playing the whole thing dow n. The last thing we want is everyone discovering what we have and wanting their ow n slice! "I'm from Tassie", I proudly exclaim at every new cast meet and greet, for whatever show I am starting to rehearse on the mainland. Then I sit back and listen to them go on about how they love Tasmania and regale me about their fondest memory of the time they spent there. Clockwise from left: Jamie McGregor as Timon and John X as Pumbaa in Disney's THE LION KING (2006); as the Evil Baron Drear in last year's Bawdy Panto BOOBS IN THE WOOD; as Mr Braithwaite in BILLY ELLIOT The Musical (2008) Tony McKendrick
