Life on the move The Rambler Rebel, assembled in Australia, was described as having executive status, and featured breathing Ventilair v inyl upholstery. Father’s Day was approaching and a great gift would be Chrysler accessories, which make Dad’s Valiant or Hillman “twice the car”. The RACT got into the act, too, producing a new club tie in time for Fathers’ Day, costing $2.50. “ The new tie (pictured) is of pure silk...” Unfortunately though, the editor forgot to include the picture of the tie. But as old media hacks used to say, lawyers can bury their mistakes – journalists put their mistakes on page 1 for all to see. “Join the coatless drivers’ brigade,” advised an advertisement, by buying a K ar ima heater/demister for $15.95. Another ad recommended the Toyota Crow n. “ Wallow in a Crown’s incomparable luxury,” it advised, highlighting the electric clock in the Crown and the push-button radio. On the news front, a traffic engineer’s seminar in Melbour ne heard that within 20 years, “40% of Australia’s total mileage might well be on freeways, with accident rates greatly reduced.” Percy Street in Launceston was becoming a nightmare, with cars parked on both sides, and semi-trailers having great difficulty turning into it. The R ACT recommended that the Council provide off-street car parking in one or two vacant blocks it ow ned in Percy Street. In the North West, the R ACT’s regional advisory committee had a win with a decision to move the location of the Cooee Post Office pedestr ian crossing, which was sited on the Bass Highway on the crest of a hill and in the middle of a bend. It was the most dangerous pedestrian crossing in the state, according to the North West Regional Advisory Committee. “ When is one of the State’s main highways a give-way street?” asked another Motor News story. “ When it’s the Bass Highway approach to the Leven River Br idge at Ulverstone. But the Club does not agree.” Then, as now, the RACT was campaigning hard on behalf of its members. Nice to know that in an ever changing world, some things don’t change.
