Home loans that really reward you Home Loan application fee Life on the move When Neil Ar mstrong landed on the moon in 1969, the RACT was pre- occupied by its own big step forward. “The RACT has taken probably the biggest single step in its history,” reported Motor News just weeks after the ‘one small step for mankind’ on the moon. Motor News was referring to the purchase of its new headquar ters building on the corner of Murray and Patrick Streets. Fast- forward to 2010 and as the RACT prepares to move back onto the same site in November this year, into a redeveloped $17 million complex, we can look back over 41 years on a time “when you drive a new Monaro you’re letting the world know you know your cars,” a s one advertisement put it in Motor News. In 1969 the RACT Travel Service was offering berths on the Sitmar liner Fairsky from Hobart to London for $453. A selection of cr uises featured ships such as the Canberra, Himalaya, Iberia, Southern Cross and Orcades, all long-since scrapped on the beaches of Pakistan and the ship breakers’ yards of Taiwan. Car reviews in the August 1969 Motor Ne ws also featured vehicles either consigned to scrap yards or lovingly restored by veteran car lovers. But who could love the ugliest duckling of them all – the Mitsubishi Colt 1100? “It’s a pity”, said Motor News, “that Mitsubishi decided to attach the tag ‘Fastback’ to their Colt 1100. The name suggests a sports car type and that’s what the Colt is not.” Nevertheless, Motor Ne ws thought it a “family car with a wide appeal...” Meanwhile, GMH had increased the interior comfort, safety and performance of the 1969 HT Brougham, and the Mazda R100 Coupe was described as the “luxurious lady with a Wankel rotary heart.” Lauded for its safety features was the Triumph TR6. “Safety has been well taken care of with thick dashboard padding, and crushable-type control knobs.” A dive in the archive Stuart Bridges 1969 – big steps and little steps
