Famous for its Ter ra Rossa soil, which is weathered limestone stained red by mineral and organic matter overlaying the limestone, the growing conditions for grapes are supported by a generally war m summer and annual rainfall of approximately 650mm. From the 1960s Coonawar ra established an enviable reputation as a leading Cabernet Sauvignon production region in Australia. Shiraz and Merlot are also grow n in the area, as well as Riesling and Chardonnay, but it can be argued that it is the Caber net grape variety that lends itself to the region. Medium-weighted wines with rich inten sity, palate length and long aftertaste are typical and from the best years, the wine drinker is rewarded with complex fr uit and long ageing potential. Some wines that have been tasted going back to the late 60s and 70s are still drinking very well. Caber net Sauvignon and Shira z from Coonawarra can be recommended to age up to 10, 15 and 20 years, depending on the vintage and cellaring conditions. Two Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignons that have been tasted recently stand out as excellent ex amples of wines from the region. Winemaker Greg Clayfield at the family-ow ned Zema Estate has produced an outstanding 2006 Caber net Sauvignon. Vibrant purple red colour and a bouquet of dark ber ries with a touch of vanillin oak is followed by a long palate, intensely flavoured with blackcurrant cassis characters. The finish is long and satisfying with soft velvety tannin s cleansing the palate. Cellaring potential is good and in ideal conditions should be fine for up to ten years. This wine can be drunk now with stronger meat dishes such as beef or lamb but could also be enjoyed with a firm cheese such as the Ashgrove premium vintage cheddar. Paul Gordon, the winemaker at the Leconfield winery, is another master craftsm an. Paul has produced a marvellous 2008 Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon. Leconfield is another family-ow ned vineyard and winery, having been in the Hamilton family for many years. The 2008 Leconfield Cabernet Sauvignon has a deep rich colour with a cassis/blackcurrant, cedar and a hint of the classical Coonawar ra minty character on the nose. The palate is mouth- filling and long with soft savoury tannins, finishing with mouth stimulating acidity. This wine can be enjoyed now with beef kebabs, venison backstraps or a good slice of Pyengana cheddar. Both the red wines mentioned show classical characters of one of Australia's leading wine-producing areas. The wines are approachable now yet have the potential to reward careful cellaring over the next five to ten years if not longer. Six bottles of each wine have been offered to R ACT Wine Club members.
