Journeys : RACT MNJ June July 2010
Let APT whisk you away from reality, where there's no alarm clock, just the sound of water lapping against the ship as you wake -- a soothing start to another intriguing day cruising Europe's lifeblood. The day might start as you slide open the glass doors of your balcony, enjoy a fresh- brewed coffee and take in a personal and unimpeded view of the world outside. Beyond the banks of the mighty Danube, the landscapes of the Wachau Valley drift by. Home seems a world away -- but you can catch up with the news on television and check your email, if you like. Then it's time for breakfast with friends you've made on board. In the ship's restaurant, the views are constantly changing. Yesterday, the windows revealed a Ger man landscape -- today begins in the enchanting Austrian city of Melk, at the Benedictine Abbey, one of Europe's largest Baroque monasteries. You're impressed by the grandeur of this famous landmark -- it's just as your APT Cr uise Director had described. Later, after a superb lunch back on board, you choose a book from the library and head for the Sun Deck. Here, your favourite lounge chair awaits, along with the sun, scenery and a soothing river breeze. Before long, the ship docks in the heart of Dür nstein, a quaint tow n in Lower Austria. On a guided walk, it seems the cobbled streets are guarding ancient secrets as they lead your small group to 16th century tow nhouses and taverns. When the ship sets sail later in the day, you decide to skip a session in the Fitness Centre and look for ward to dinner and the evening's entertainment. With fresh local produce, the chef weaves some culinary magic to create the sumptuous regional specialities on the four-course menu. Free-flowing local wines perfectly complement the meal. A pleasant evening of conversation and entertainment unwinds as the ship meanders to the next tow n -- tomor row promises to be another idyllic day. Life aboard an APT European river cruise I was lucky enough to be offered a spot on a 7-day APT Europe River Cruise, travelling on the Danube from Nuremburg to Budapest on the luxurious 5-star MS Amadagio. We had the choice to relax in the sunshine on deck, gliding past lush fields, towering mountains and medieval ruins; or keeping busy with the many tour options available. Every day we were spoilt by the all-included sumptuous food. We explored amazing cities and I loved cycling from Melk to Durnstein, riding through picturesque vineyards and meeting the local people. The trip of a lifetime! Favourite place: Vienna and Budapest Most memorable moment: Cycling from Melk to Durnstein Favourite tour: Salzburg / Sound of Music -- Freedom of Choice Tour Why would you recommend river cruising: Unpack once, all-inclusive, fabulous meals, beautiful scenery.
