Journeys : RACT MNJ June July 2010
Is your home fire safe? We're entering a busy time for RACT Insurance. Winter is always a period of mishaps and disasters in the home as the community's attention moves indoors. It's a time of fewer barbecues on the patio and more kitchen-cooked meals; electric heaters and bed warmers are brought out of the cupboard, and matches are put to kindling in the fireplace. Over the years, RACT Insurance has seen it all: electric heaters knockedover by the dog, fires on an unattended stove, and even a policy holder who cleaned out their fireplace and put the ash in a plastic bin on the back porch. In the night air, embers in the ash stirred and the resident awoke to find their porch on fire. The dangers of fire around the home increase over the winter months and RACT Insurance have experienced first hand with our customers the devastating impact this can have. So as winter extends its icy grip around the family home, RACT Insurance has been working with the Tasmania Fire Service to bring readers some useful advice. Winter is the busiest time for Tasmania's firefighters. According to the Tasmania Fire Service, 78 per cent of all fire-related deaths occur between May and October. 24 June / July 2010
