Insurance matters A regular column from RACT Insurance CEO Trent Sayers Life on the move You ring a repairman to fix the plumbing in the laundry. While he's at work the family dog enters the laundry, sees a stranger and bites the plumber. You get sued. If you don't have insurance, it could be very expensive for you, because it's all about your legal liability. As an ow ner-occupier, you have, under the law, certain responsibilities -- and they are not matters we often think about until an incident occurs. Sadly, we live in an increasingly litigious world and insurance companies are almost routinely dealing with liability issues on often-unexpected incidents, such as dog bites, cars r unning over pets, tradespeople taking a fall around a home, and even cars crashing into buildings. Sometimes, litigation arising from an incident can r uin a family's finances -- even send home-ow ners bankr upt -- if they don't have insurance. Legal liability on your building policy covers you for events that happen on your property for which you are liable as the ow ner-occupier. Beyond that, your contents policy covers you for incidents for which you are liable outside your home, but within Australia. We deal with multiple cases each year where our customers need to access this coverage on their policies. Although not as common as claims for stor m or theft, the dollar impact for a liability claim has the potential to be quite significant if you are found in someway liable for contributing to another person's injury. We often hear news reports about major incidents such as balconies collapsing and causing injury to a number of people. However most liability cases result from everyday situations such as dogs running onto the road and causing a car to crash, water pipes bursting on your property and causing damage to other properties, or visitors to your property injuring themselves while at your home. Situations such as these can all give rise to legal liability claims. We may all wish for a retur n to a time when life was simpler than it is now. But the realities of the 21st century impel us to be adequately protected in the event of the unexpected. Insurance cover can be a great back-stop if you become subject to a liability claim!
