There are some great opportunities to experience something totally different within Australia. One such destination is Far North Queen sland -- it's a place where you can have a worthwhile experience in a getaway of 5-7 days, as I found on a recent visit. I was in Cairns for a conference and took the opportunity to experience the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree. I took the Quick Silver Outer Reef excursion from Port Douglas and had an amazing time. Quick Silver has a platform on the outer reef -- they provide snorkelling gear as well as a submersible craft and scuba diving equipment and training for the adventurous. I must have looked a sight in my full-body Lycra suit, which provides protection from the stingers. I tried snorkelling and it was an amazing experience to swim above the coral and among a huge ar ray of fish of all colours, shapes and sizes. The other great adventure was the Daintree. I hired a Rav4 from Hertz and headed past Port Douglas and Mossman (it's worth making a detour to the Mossman Gorge) to get the vehicular fer ry over the Daintree River and then on up to Cape Tribulation. On the retur n trip, I took Br uce Belcher's Daintree River Cruise and enjoyed a leisurely hour on the river spotting small crocodiles, snakes and birds and lear ning a lot about the history of the Daintree. Cair ns, Port Douglas and Far North Queensland have many other attractions including Green Island, Hartleys Crocodile World, Kuranda Village and the Sky Train. The pace of life is leisurely and there's a host of friendly bars and restaurants. The Wet Season is usually December till March -- maybe this isn't the best time to visit but the temperature is mid to high twenties for the rest of the year. Give it a try for your next short break or stay a little longer and really get into the tropical lifestyle!
