Sales of Chardonnay and Riesling, the more traditional grape varieties that Australians in the past have enjoyed, have suffered. Indeed lovers of Riesling are sometimes perplexed as to why their favoured grape variety has not matched Sauvignon Blanc in sales. No matter what Riesling lovers think, the undeniable position is that Sauvignon Blanc has taken Australian white wine drinkers by storm, particularly New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Well, we think it would be a good challenge to taste some well-made New Zealand Sauvignon Blancs against some from Tasmania. We have a mini cross-Tasman competition for you, with some Tasmanian Rieslings thrown in. The taste-off is on 10 March in the tasting room at the Tasmanian Wine Centre, 201 Collins Street, Hobart. We will be tasting twelve interesting and topical wines from the three categories. It should be a lot of fun! The cost is $15.00 per head and will commence at 6.15 pm. Please phone 6234 8003 for enquiries and bookings. Congratulations to J. Hiscutt who won the 10 dozen bottles of wine in last year's Wine Club members promotion, draw n several days before Christmas. It was an appropriate time of year for anyone to win such a handsome prize. I am sure family and friends will help celebrate the win! To go into the draw to win ten dozen bottles of wine in December 2010, all you have to do is buy a dozen bottles of wine through the R ACT Wine Club. Every case purchased will give you a ticket. Good luck! David Johnstone, SJW Senior Judge of Wine February / March 10 50
