Several years ago, after a period of ill- health, to regain confidence I booked a refresher course of lesson s with an R ACT instructor. He made it quite clear that, on the open road, I should drive at a speed with which I was comfortable, provided, of course, that I extended courtesy to other road users. Valerie Proverbs Kings Meadows Lights on in the wet I am still amazed at the number of motorists who do not tur n their headlights on during wet conditions. On asking some people why, they responded that they don't help you see any better in wet weather, so why bother? Last year was one of the wettest winters on record with some very heavy falls. Big increase on the Spirit I'm w riting to ask why vehicle and caravan fares on the TT Line have increased so dramatically. We have sent some emails to Tasmanian politicians but as yet have had no reply. We are frequent travellers on the Spirit of Tasmania. Last year our car and caravan (total length 12 metres) cost us $502 return. As from now, the price for the same 12 metres will cost us $866 -- a 70% increase! Not a great encouragement for mainland tourists to bring their car and caravans to Tassie. As for us we will have to leave our caravan in storage on the mainland. Judy and Lionel Williams Tur ning your lights on in wet weather is not for you to see better but for everyone else to see you! With all the manufacturers looking at improving safety, another very easy device to include would be a relay that automatically tur ns on your lights when your windscreen wipers are turned on. Park lights go on when your wipers are turned on to intermittent and headlights go on when wipers are fully on. And maybe even hazards could come on when wipers are in full swing. A delay could be incorporated so that they don't come on when using your cleaning function. This could be installed as an aftermarket fitting at a very minim al cost and if made compulsory think of the lives it might save. Can anyone come up with some downsides? Waine Whitbread Wilmot We need rail! I agree with Greg Goodman that we need certainty for the future of the railway system in Tasmania. As a long term member of R ACT I am pleased that the club is in regular dialogue with the gover nment about the future of rail. Since our highways have become so congested there is an urgent need to rejuvenate the railway system between north and south. The food and wine industry and other aspects of cultural tourism would flourish in Tasmania if this vision were embraced. Joanne Wild Elizabeth Town Nobody needs to get stoned I have an issue with utilities that have been converted to flat trays, then either no mudguard has been fitted at all, or even if there is one, the installation of a lift kit leaves too much of the rear wheel exposed. Recently I was following such a ute with no guards at all and on corners it would drop off the edges of the road and throw up rocks into the path of following traffic. Driving behind this ute on a gravel road would be very dangerous indeed. Obviously you can (and should) back off further but it still does not justify this dangerous practice. I wonder if ute ow ners are aware of the danger -- and would police or transport in spectors ever pull them up? J. Patterson For an off-road 4WD vehicle, regulations state that the maximum distance between the bottom of the mudflap and the road is 300mm. Police, or more likely Transport Tasmania officers, will stop these vehicles and issue a defect notice if mudflap clearance exceeds regulations. The open chunky nature of tyre tread patterns tends to accentuate the amount of rocks and debris emitted from the back of these vehicles. It is very sound advice to increase your following distance for both safety reasons and to avoid stone-chip damage to the front of your vehicle.
