RACT Insurance recently won a prestigious national award for its Tasmanian Youth Portraiture Prize. ABAF -- the Australia Business Arts Foundation -- awarded RACT Insurance and its principal partner in the program, Tasmanian Regional Arts, the Encouragement Award. ABAF seeks to promote relation ships between the Australian business and arts communities. This year was the second year of the Tasmanian Youth Portraiture Prize, which was instigated by R ACT Insurance and operates in partnership with Tasmanian Astatewide touring exhibition of prize finalists concluded in Hobart with the announcement of the People's Choice winner. Visitors to the exhibition voted for their favourite portrait and the winner was Rachael Gates of Richmond, for her portrait of legendary jazzman Ian Pearce. Rachael was also a r unner up in the main award. She wins $500. Regional Arts, Clemenger Tasmania, RACT Travelworld and GEON. Accepting the award in Brisbane, the Chief Executive Officer of R ACT In surance, Trent Sayers, said the Portraiture Prize was designed to do a number of things. "It provides a platform for aspiring young Tasmanian artists, it helps to build a body of uniquely-Tasmanian portraiture works reflecting our society in the early 21st century and it also celebrates people who live in every Tasmanian community," he said. Lindisfarne artist Nathan Grey beat 60 other entries to win the 2009 prize.
