It’s been declared the Year of the Blood Donor, and to mark the occasion the Australian Red Cross Blood Service aims to sign up more than 160,000 new blood donors around the country. RACT Insurance is a strong supporter of the Blood Service in Tasmania. ”We provide our staff with paid time off work to donate blood, and we’d urge other organisations in Tasmania to do the same,” says Trent Sayers, Chief Executive Officer of RACT Insurance. “No matter what puts you in need of a blood transfusion, the blood you receive is the life-saving gift of a volunteer donor, and it’s really important that we all do as much as we can to promote blood donorship,” he says. www.ract.com.au 24 August / September 09 Blood donors save three lives each time they donate. One in three Australians will need blood or blood products during their life, yet only one in 30 Australians donate. Most donated blood goes to people with cancer, as well as people who have suffered traumatic accidents, burns, or who undergo surgery. The colder months are especially challenging for the Blood Service as many of their regular donors are unable to donate due to colds and flu. About 30 RACT Insurance staff responded to the 2008 winter blood challenge by donating blood, and again this year the team from RACT Insurance has taken up the challenge. Over the last two years, blood donated by RACT Insurance staff have helped to save over 150 lives. Do something special. Give blood.
