Journeys : June July 2009
Winter 2009 – Melbourne rocks! W hen the weather cools down, the action heats up in Melbourne. This winter, whatever your passion, Melbourne is the place to shop, dine and enjoy numerous events. This winter there will be action-packed AFL games, rugby league State of Origin and the eagerly awaited FIFA World Cup match between Australia and Japan. The Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series continues in 2009 with Salvador Dali: Liquid Desire and A Day in Pompeii. Broadway’s multi award-winning smashhit musical JERSEY BOYS, the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, will rock Melbourne this winter. JERSEY BOYS is the story of how four boys from the wrong side of the tracks became one of the biggest American pop music sensations of all time. The Four Seasons burst onto the international music scene in the 1960s to become a huge name in music history. Frankie Valli, Bob Gaudio, Tommy DeVito and Nick Massi wrote their own songs, invented their own sounds and sold 175 million records worldwide, all before they were thirty! JERSEY BOYS features 20 Four Seasons hit songs including Sherry, Big Girls Don’t Cry, Rag Doll, Oh What a Night and Can’t Take My Eyes Off You. The critics rave about JERSEY BOYS. ‘Too good to be true!’(New York Post), ‘Oh what a night!’ (London Times), ‘A mega-hit!’ (LA Weekly). JERSEY BOYS has won a tally of over 17 major international awards including the 2009 Best New Musical at the recent Laurence Olivier Awards in London, four 2006 Tony Awards® including Best Musical and a Grammy Award for Best Musical Show Album. It also topped the Billboard album charts. Since opening in New York, more than five million people have seen JERSEY BOYS worldwide on Broadway, London, Las Vegas, San Francisco, Chicago, Toronto and a US national tour. This year it’s Melbourne’s turn when JERSEY BOYS has its Australian premiere at the Princess Theatre on 4 July. The Four Seasons The Four Seasons was one of the most successful vocal groups of the 1960s with a series of smash hit singles from 1962 to 1967. Their signature sound was the three-octave falsetto voice of Frankie Valli which allowed the group to create wonderful harmonies and hit the high notes others could only dream of. The Four Seasons are the only group to have a Top 100 Billboard hit in each decade of the 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s and 90s.
