Huon Food Trail T he Huon Food Trail is an initiative of Huon Bush Retreats in conjunction with the Huon and Kingborough Councils. On the trail you’ll enjoy a day touring the Huon Valley and D’Entrecasteaux Channel playing hunter-gatherer, returning to your accommodation with a hamper of fresh local ingredients. Follow the suggested recipes to produce a delicious meal! The booklet has four trails – The Far South, Bruny Island and Channel, Huonville and Surrounds and Cygnet Coast and Channel. Each trail provides a three-course menu with itineraries, shopping lists and recipes. It is produced seasonally to reflect the varied foods of the region. The summer booklet includes this Huonville and Surrounds itinerary: Start with a leisurely walk in the magnificent old-growth forest at Huon Bush Retreats, then a short drive to Home Hill Winery or Panorama Providore for tastings. Pick up an award winning pinot noir to accompany this evening’s meal. Continue to the Lucaston Park Orchards roadside stall, for the best apple juice you’ll ever taste. A fascinating hour or two at the Apple Museum is followed by the Green Shed for cherries, cherry jam and garlic. In Huonville visit Granny Lew’s Organics for cheese, mushrooms, potatoes and a lemon. The local IGA supermarket provides the organic steaks and organic icecream. Return to Huon Bush Retreats for native pepper berries and pear honey. Then it’s back to your well-equipped, self contained cabin to prepare your meal: • Entree - Huon Valley Swiss brown or cup mushrooms stuffed with local goats cheese and topped with pear honey • Main - Organic Huon Valley steak or smoked tofu with lemon mash, native pepper and pinot sauce, served with local seasonal vegetables or salad. • Dessert - Fresh fruits and organic ice- cream. The 16 page booklet is available by visiting Huon Bush Retreats and some other Huon Trail tourism operators. There is no charge for the booklet and it is available to both overnight and day visitors. Huon Bush Retreats day visitors can enjoy five kilometres of bushwalking tracks. Cabins, tipees and a campground are set in an extensive private habitat reserve, just 50 minutes south from Hobart – it’s the perfect place to relax, explore and experience nature. If the summer menu appeals to you, wait until you see what’s planned for autumn – collect your free Huon Food Trail booklet on your next journey to the region. The Huon Trail - An Inspiring Drive.
